What is a novena?

A novena is a form of Catholic devotional prayer lasting nine consecutive days (or weeks), offered for a specific intention or in honor of a saint, the Blessed Virgin Mary, or a mystery of the faith. The practice draws its inspiration from the nine days the Apostles and Mary spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost.
