What is the Assumption of Mary?

The Assumption of Mary is the dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. Defined infallibly by Pope Pius XII in 1950, it is celebrated as a Holy Day of Obligation on August 15 and is the crown of all Marian privileges.

Significance for the Faithful

August 15 invites the faithful to fix their eyes on heaven, to entrust themselves to Mary's maternal intercession, and to renew their own hope in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.
