A short man climbs a sycamore tree in Jericho to catch sight of Jesus passing by.

Daily devotional: Up the Sycamore: Zacchaeus Seeks Jesus

Friday, October 09, 2026

Good morning. Today we step into Jericho and look up at Zacchaeus in the sycamore tree, determined to see Jesus for himself.

Today's Verse

"And behold, there was a man named Zacheus, who was the chief of the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was, and he could not for the crowd, because he was low of stature. And running before, he climbed up into a sycamore tree that he might see him; for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up, he saw him, and said to him: Zacheus, make haste and come down; for this day I must abide in thy house. And he made haste and came down; and received him with joy."
— Luke 19:2-6

Reflection

Zacchaeus did not stand back and complain about the crowd. In Jericho, this wealthy tax collector ran ahead, climbed a sycamore tree, and put himself in plain view just to see Jesus pass by. His seeking was awkward, visible, and active. In ordinary life, seeking can look like getting up earlier to pray before work, asking an honest question, or stepping away from noise so you can notice where Christ is passing near today.

Seeking means making a real, sometimes uncomfortable move toward Jesus instead of waiting for a clearer path.

1-Minute Study: Understanding seeking

Seeking in Scripture is not vague curiosity; it is movement. Zacchaeus wanted to see who Jesus was, but the crowd blocked him and his height limited him. So he changed position, ran ahead, and climbed. Seeking often begins when we stop using obstacles as our final answer. Blind Bartimaeus cried out over the noise of the road, and the Magi crossed distance to find the child Christ. In each case, seeking required intention, inconvenience, and focus. Autumn gives this virtue a fitting picture. Leaves turn, branches thin, and what was hidden becomes easier to see. Seeking may ask us to let some habits fall away so our view of Christ is less crowded. A phone set aside for ten minutes, a walk without earbuds, a needed conversation, a Bible opened before bed—these are small sycamore trees. We do not earn Christ's notice by climbing; we simply place ourselves where we can better see and gladly receive him.

Prayer of the Day

Lord Jesus, Zacchaeus ran ahead and climbed because he wanted to see You. Give me that same willing heart when the crowd, my schedule, or my pride gets in the way. Show me what I need to set aside today so I can seek You on purpose. And when You call, help me come down quickly and receive You with joy. Amen.

Today's Challenge

Choose one ten-minute block today, put your phone out of reach, read Luke 19:2-6 slowly, and write down one obstacle that has been blocking your view of Jesus.
