Good morning. Today we sit in Bethany, where Mary kneels at Jesus' feet with costly ointment and quiet devotion.
Today's Verse
"Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always."— John 12:3-8
Reflection
At supper in Bethany, Mary opens a pound of costly spikenard, pours it on Jesus' feet, and wipes them with her hair. The fragrance fills the whole house while Judas complains about the expense. Jesus defends her act as fitting for the moment before his burial. Devotion often looks excessive to people measuring only efficiency. In harvest season, gratitude may mean giving Christ our best time, attention, and resources before we calculate what is left.
Devotion gives Jesus first place, even when that offering seems costly to others.
1-Minute Study: Understanding devotion
Devotion is not vague religious feeling; it is love expressed in deliberate, visible action. Mary did not admire Jesus from across the room. She brought what was precious, knelt low, and accepted the misunderstanding that followed. Her devotion was costly in money, reputation, and comfort. The perfume could not be recovered once poured out. That is part of devotion: it spends itself on Christ without demanding applause or repayment. Scripture shows this pattern again and again. David refused to offer the Lord that which cost him nothing. The widow gave two mites, small in amount yet weighty in love. Mary of Bethany adds another picture: devotion recognizes the moment and responds personally. During harvest season, when we notice barns, tables, and paychecks filled by God's provision, devotion asks, "What part of this abundance belongs at Jesus' feet first?" It may be the first unhurried minutes of the morning, a generous gift, or a hidden act of service done for his sake.

Prayer of the Day
Lord Jesus, Mary poured out what was costly and knelt at your feet without reserve. Teach me that kind of devotion when my schedule is crowded and my heart is calculating. In this season of harvest, make me grateful for your provision and ready to offer you my best. Let my daily choices carry the fragrance of love that honors you.
Today's Challenge
Set aside the first 15 minutes of today for Christ alone—put away your phone, read John 12:3-8 slowly, and give one concrete gift from this week's provision to someone in need.
