A Small Lunch Placed in Jesus’ Hands

A boy offers five barley loaves and two fishes, and Jesus feeds the crowd.

Daily devotional: A Small Lunch Placed in Jesus’ Hands

Sunday, September 13, 2026

Good morning. Today we look closely at the boy who handed over his small lunch to Jesus on the hillside by the sea. His offering seemed limited, but it did not stay small in the Lord’s hands.

Today's Verse

"There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes: but what are these among so many? And Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. The men therefore sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down. In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would."
— John 6:9-11

Reflection

On a grassy hillside, a boy’s meal of five barley loaves and two fishes was noticed, questioned, and then placed before Jesus. He did not feed the crowd by keeping it back, but by offering it. In harvest season, that picture lands close to home: a packed lunch shared with a coworker, produce given from a garden, money set aside for a struggling family, time offered when a neighbor is overwhelmed. What we release to Christ in gratitude becomes useful beyond its size.

Offering begins when we stop measuring our gift by its size and place it in Jesus’ hands with thanks.

1-Minute Study: Understanding offering

Offering is not mainly about surplus; it is about surrender. In John 6, the boy’s barley loaves were ordinary food, likely a simple poor man’s meal, yet he let it be used. That is the heart of offering: giving something real, needed, and concrete to God’s purposes. Scripture often shows this pattern. The widow of Sarepta gave Elijah a little cake from her last handful of meal, and God provided through the famine. The widow in the temple gave two mites, and Christ honored the depth of her gift. Offering may be food, money, space at the table, a ride to an appointment, or an hour spent helping with a harvest task. During harvest season, we remember that grain, fruit, wages, and strength all come from God first. We offer back not to impress Him, but to acknowledge His provision and to let others be fed through what we have received.

Prayer of the Day

Lord Jesus, You received a boy’s small lunch and gave thanks before feeding the multitude. Teach me to offer what I actually have instead of excusing myself because it seems too little. In this harvest season, make me grateful, open-handed, and ready to share. Use my offering to meet someone’s real need today. Amen.

Today's Challenge

Set aside one concrete offering today—a meal, garden produce, grocery money, or one hour of practical help—and give it to a specific person in need.
