Joseph’s Faithful Words in a Prison Cell

Today's Verse

"And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you. And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days: Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler."

Reflection

Joseph was not in a place of honor when this happened. He was in prison, listening to the cupbearer and baker describe troubling dreams. He did not pretend to have power of his own; he said interpretations belong to God, then served faithfully with the insight God gave. Faithfulness often looks like this today: doing careful work in an overlooked place, answering honestly, and helping someone else even when your own situation has not yet changed.

Faithfulness is doing the right work before God, even when the room is small and the reward is delayed.

Faithfulness in Joseph’s prison story is not dramatic at first glance. It is steady, disciplined, and God-centered. Joseph had been falsely accused and forgotten, yet when two officials woke troubled by dreams, he paid attention. He did not use their need to make himself important. Instead, he said plainly that interpretation belongs to God. That is faithfulness: telling the truth about God, serving people in front of you, and using your gifts without claiming the credit. Joseph’s faithfulness had already appeared in Potiphar’s house, where he worked responsibly, and it continues here in confinement. Later, the cupbearer would be restored exactly as Joseph said. Faithfulness does not depend on ideal conditions. It shows up in the nurse who keeps careful notes on a long shift, the employee who gives an honest report, the parent who keeps a promise after a tiring day. Joseph teaches us that faithfulness is proven in hidden places before it is recognized in public ones.

Prayer of the Day

Lord God, Joseph spoke truth in a prison cell and gave You the credit. Teach me that kind of faithfulness in the tasks I would rather rush through or avoid. Help me listen well, speak honestly, and serve steadily where I am today. Let my work be reliable, even before anyone notices.
