When Gideon Laid Out the Fleece

Today's Verse

"And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said, I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the earth beside, I shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel. And it was so. And rising before day, wringing the fleece, he filled a bowl with the dew. And Gedeon said again to God: Let not thy wrath be kindled against me, if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that only the fleece may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew. And God did that night as he had requested: and there was dry on the fleece only, and dew on all the ground."

Reflection

Gideon did not make a vague request. He placed a wool fleece on the threshing floor, asked for dew on the fleece and dry ground, then reversed the sign the next night. He was not stalling for drama; he wanted clarity before risking lives. Discernment often looks like that today: slowing down before changing jobs, beginning a relationship, signing a lease, or speaking a hard truth, and asking God for light instead of rushing ahead on nerves alone.

Discernment is the patient work of testing a decision before you act on it.

Discernment is not indecision dressed up as spirituality, and it is not demanding endless proof before obeying. It is the habit of distinguishing between impulse, fear, pressure, and the steady direction of God. Gideon’s fleece in Judges 6 shows a man who wanted confirmation because the task before him was weighty and public. Scripture also shows other forms of discernment: Samuel learned to say, “Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth” when he did not yet recognize God’s voice, and Solomon asked for “an understanding heart” to judge rightly. In ordinary life, discernment may mean asking: Does this choice fit what God has already made clear in Scripture? Is my motive honest? Am I reacting from panic, vanity, or resentment? Have I sought wise counsel? Summer’s slower rhythm can help here. A quieter week, a walk without headphones, or a written list of motives can reveal whether you are chasing relief or following truth.
