Eyes on Jesus for the Long Run

Daily devotional: Eyes on Jesus for the Long Run

Friday, August 14, 2026

Good morning, and welcome to Hail Mary Daily. Today we step into Hebrews’ vivid picture of a runner on the track, laying aside every weight and looking steadily at Jesus.

Today's Verse

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
— Hebrews 12:1-2

Reflection

Hebrews first gives us a scene: runners stripping off anything heavy, a crowd of witnesses surrounding them, and Jesus ahead, having already endured the cross and reached the finish. Endurance here is not dramatic speed but steady faithfulness. In late-summer routines, endurance looks like returning the difficult phone call, caring for family without applause, or continuing honest work when motivation fades. We keep going by dropping what hinders and fixing our attention on Christ.

Endurance is choosing the next faithful step when the race feels long.

1-Minute Study: Understanding endurance

In Hebrews 12, endurance is not passive waiting; it is disciplined perseverance. The image is athletic: a runner removes extra weight, refuses entanglement, and keeps moving toward the finish. The chapter follows Hebrews 11, where Noah kept building, Abraham kept traveling, and Moses kept choosing obedience before he saw the outcome. Their lives show that endurance is formed over time through repeated trust. Jesus is the clearest example. He did not avoid pain by taking an easier path; he endured the cross with his eyes on the joy beyond it. That makes endurance deeply practical for us. It may mean staying patient in a draining caregiving season, continuing prayer when answers seem delayed, or keeping integrity in work that feels unnoticed. During summer ordinary time, when life slows enough to reveal our real habits, endurance grows as we set aside distractions, accept the race actually given to us, and keep our gaze on Christ rather than on our fatigue.

Prayer of the Day

Lord Jesus, You set before us the picture of the race and endured the cross to its end. Teach me to lay aside what slows my obedience and weakens my attention. Give me endurance for the duties in front of me today, and keep my eyes fixed on You when I am tired.

Today's Challenge

Choose one recurring burden that drains your faithfulness—such as doom-scrolling, procrastination, or unnecessary busyness—and set a concrete limit on it today so you can complete one neglected responsibility without quitting.
