Anna’s Long Watch in the Temple

Today's Verse

"And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was far advanced in years, and had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity. And she was a widow until fourscore and four years; who departed not from the temple, by fastings and prayers serving night and day. Now she, at the same hour, coming in, confessed to the Lord: and spoke of him to all that looked for the redemption of Israel."

Reflection

Anna is not introduced by a dramatic miracle but by years: seven with her husband, then decades as a widow, praying and fasting in the temple. When Mary and Joseph bring Jesus in, Anna is there, ready, attentive, and quick to speak about Him. Devotion often looks like this in ordinary life: returning to prayer after dishes, showing up again after grief, keeping a notebook of answered prayers, and staying near God long enough to recognize His work when it appears.

Devotion is steady nearness to God that trains the heart to recognize Him.

Anna’s devotion was not brief enthusiasm; it was a long obedience shaped by place, habit, and love. Luke tells us she “departed not from the temple,” serving “by fastings and prayers night and day.” Her life had known loss, yet grief did not make her withdraw from God. Instead, it deepened her attention. That is devotion: not mere religious activity, but faithful presence before the Lord over time. Scripture shows this pattern in other lives. David wrote of seeking God early and thirsting for Him. Mary of Bethany sat at Jesus’ feet and listened carefully. Anna belongs with them. Devotion is built through repeated choices: setting aside a regular time for prayer, returning to Scripture when the mind wanders, and offering the same burdens to God without quitting. In summer’s slower rhythm, devotion may mean using quiet evenings, porch mornings, or a lunch break to remain close to the Lord with patient consistency.
