Good morning. Today we stand beside Stephen as he is struck by stones and still asks God to forgive the men around him. His final prayer shows what forgiveness looks like when the wound is real.
Today's Verse
"And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep."— Acts 7:59-60
Reflection
Stephen is not speaking from a quiet room but from the ground, under a shower of stones. He asks Jesus to receive his spirit, then uses his last breath to pray for the men killing him. That is not denial; it is costly forgiveness. In ordinary life, forgiveness may look like refusing to rehearse an insult, not drafting the bitter text, or praying for the coworker, sibling, or former friend who wounded you.
Forgiveness begins when we stop handing another person’s sin more room inside our own heart.
1-Minute Study: Understanding forgiveness
Stephen’s forgiveness is striking because it happens in the middle of violence, not after an apology. He does not call evil good, and he does not pretend the stones do not hurt. He names the sin by asking God not to charge it against them. Biblical forgiveness is not excusing wrong or removing consequences; it is releasing personal revenge into God’s hands. Jesus did this on the cross: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Stephen follows his Lord closely, even in death. Joseph also forgave brothers who had sold him, speaking honestly about their evil while trusting God’s larger mercy. In modern life, forgiveness may mean you stop building your identity around the injury. You may still need boundaries, a hard conversation, or distance. But forgiveness refuses to keep feeding the injury with fresh anger every day.

Prayer of the Day
Lord Jesus, Stephen knelt under flying stones and asked mercy for the men who hurt him. Teach me that kind of honest forgiveness when I am wronged. Keep me from replaying the offense and nursing it in secret. Receive my pain, and help me release revenge into Your hands. Amen.
