Two Mites, Whole Heart

Jesus watches a widow place two small coins in the treasury and honors her sacrifice.

Daily devotional: Two Mites, Whole Heart

Friday, September 25, 2026

Good morning. Today we stand near the treasury with Jesus, watching a poor widow drop in two mites while others give from abundance.

Today's Verse

"And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."
— Mark 12:41-44

Reflection

Jesus does not glance at the treasury; he sits down and watches. Rich worshipers drop in large sums, then a widow steps forward and gives two tiny coins. Jesus says her gift is greater because it costs her something. In harvest season, when barns, budgets, and grocery lists are on our minds, sacrifice may look like giving when money is tight, making time for a lonely neighbor, or sharing a meal you had planned to keep.

Sacrifice is measured not by size, but by what love is willing to release.

1-Minute Study: Understanding sacrifice

The widow's offering shows that sacrifice is not leftover giving; it is costly trust. She does not contribute what she will not miss. She places into God's hands the little that keeps her going. Jesus draws attention to her because heaven weighs gifts differently than people do. In Scripture, sacrifice often means giving up something valuable in obedience and love. David refused to offer the Lord what cost him nothing, and the boy who brought five loaves and two fishes gave what he had, not what he lacked. The widow's two mites belong in that same pattern: small in amount, great in surrender. During harvest season, sacrifice can mean setting aside part of a paycheck for someone in need, bringing produce to a food pantry before your own table feels full, or choosing generosity when you would rather cling to security. Sacrifice is gratitude with open hands.

Prayer of the Day

Lord Jesus, You saw the widow and honored the weight of her two small coins. Teach me to give not from what is easy, but from a heart that trusts Your provision. In this harvest season, loosen my grip on comfort and make me ready to share. Let my sacrifice be quiet, honest, and full of love. Amen.

Today's Challenge

Choose one costly act of generosity today: give a needed amount of money, groceries, or time to someone specific before spending that resource on yourself.
