A Room on the Wall for God’s Servant

Today's Verse

"And it fell on a day, that Eliseus passed by Sunam, where there was a great woman: and she detained him to eat bread: and as often as he passed, he turned in thither to eat bread. And she said to her husband: I perceive that this is a holy man of God, who often passeth by us. Let us therefore make him a little chamber, and put a bed in it for him, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick, that when he cometh to us, he may abide there."

Reflection

The Shunammite woman first offered Elisha a meal. Then, seeing that he traveled that road often, she spoke to her husband and arranged a small upstairs room with a bed, table, stool, and candlestick. Her hospitality was observant and practical. In harvest season, when kitchens are full and schedules crowded, hospitality can look like setting an extra place, preparing a simple guest corner, or checking on someone who passes through your week tired and overlooked.

Hospitality notices a real need and makes concrete room for another person.

The Shunammite woman shows that hospitality is more than being friendly. She paid attention. Elisha was not treated as a project or a performance; she saw his repeated journey, understood his weariness, and provided what would actually help: food, rest, light, and a place to stay. Scripture often presents hospitality in these ordinary forms. Abraham hastened to prepare bread, meat, and rest for his visitors. Martha received Jesus into her house. Lydia constrained Paul’s company to stay after the Lord opened her heart. In each case, hospitality cost time, space, and provisions, yet it became a way of honoring God. During harvest season, this virtue fits naturally with gratitude. When God fills the pantry, ripens the garden, or gives enough for the week, hospitality answers by loosening our grip. A shared loaf, a cleared chair, a lamp left on for a late arrival—these are small acts that say, “What God has provided me, I can use to serve another.”
