Boaz Left the Edges for Ruth

Today's Verse

"And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God."

Reflection

God first told Israel not to strip the field bare, but to leave its edges for the poor and the stranger. Years later, Boaz obeyed that command in Bethlehem, and Ruth gathered behind his reapers while Naomi was fed at home. Generosity here was not vague goodwill; it was grain left standing, extra handfuls dropped on purpose, and a widow welcomed instead of shamed. In harvest season, generosity still looks like leaving margin in our budgets, schedules, gardens, and tables for someone who needs room to gather.

Generosity leaves some of the harvest unclaimed so another person can live.

1-Minute Study: Understanding generosity

In Scripture, generosity is more than giving away leftovers; it is building mercy into the way we live. Leviticus 19:9-10 commanded landowners to stop short of maximum profit so the poor and the stranger could eat. Boaz did exactly that in Ruth’s story. He did not simply allow Ruth to glean; he protected her, instructed his young men, and told them to let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her. His generosity had structure, dignity, and cost. That matters now. Generosity is not only a donation after everything else is covered. It may mean leaving extra produce at a neighbor’s porch, adding a grocery gift card to your weekly budget, or making room in your evening for someone who needs a meal and conversation. God’s provision often reaches people through the margins we refuse to hoard. Boaz shows that a generous person does not ask, “How little must I leave?” but “How can another person gather life here?”

Prayer of the Day

Lord God, You taught Your people to leave the corners of the field, and Boaz obeyed by making room for Ruth to gather and live. Make me generous in concrete ways today, so that what I have may become provision for someone else. Amen.

Set aside one visible “edge” of your harvest today by giving away a bag of produce, buying groceries for a struggling household, or leaving part of this week’s budget specifically for someone in need.
