Jabez Asked for More Room

Today's Verse

"And Jabes was more honourable than his brethren, and his mother called his name Jabes, saying: Because I bore him with sorrow. And Jabes called upon the God of Israel, saying: If blessing thou wilt bless me, and wilt enlarge my borders, and thy hand be with me, and thou wouldst keep me from evil, that it may not hurt me. And God granted him the things he prayed for."

Reflection

Jabez appears briefly in a list of names, yet his story is concrete: his mother names him out of sorrow, and he refuses to let that sorrow set the limits of his life. He asks God for blessing, wider borders, steady help, and protection from harm. That kind of boldness matters now too—when you ask for courage to apply for a role, start a hard conversation, or step into service beyond what feels safe.

Boldness is asking God for more faithful ground to cover, not more comfort to keep.

Boldness in Scripture is not loudness, arrogance, or self-promotion. In Jabez, it is the courage to bring a large request to God with clear words: blessing, enlarged borders, God's hand, and protection from evil. He does not pretend his beginning was easy; his very name is tied to sorrow. Yet he does not pray as though sorrow has final authority. Biblical boldness asks specifically and trusts God to decide the outcome. Solomon asked for wisdom to govern well. Esther stepped forward at real personal risk. The apostles in Acts asked for boldness to speak God's word, not for an easier assignment. In ordinary summer days, boldness may look less dramatic but just as real: sending the email you have delayed, admitting you need help, beginning reconciliation with a family member, or volunteering for a task that stretches you. Bold prayer makes room for obedient action.
