Eyes on Jesus in the Wind

Today's Verse

"And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters. And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus. But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?"

Reflection

Peter did not imagine the storm; the wind was real, the waves were high, and the step out of the boat was costly. He walked toward Jesus until his attention shifted from Christ’s voice to the force around him. That same split focus happens when a phone keeps buzzing during prayer, when deadlines crowd out good judgment, or when family strain fills the mind. Focus is not pretending the wind is calm; it is choosing where to look while it blows.

Focus grows when you return your attention to Jesus faster than fear can carry it away.

In this passage, focus is not vague concentration; it is directed attention shaped by trust. Peter first shows focus when he says, “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come.” He listens for Christ’s word, receives “Come,” and acts on that word. His trouble begins not when the wind starts, but when he gives the wind more attention than the One who called him. Scripture often ties steady sight to steady living. Hebrews says to look unto Jesus; Psalm 119 asks that our eyes be turned from vanity; Colossians tells us to mind the things above. In ordinary summer days, focus is tested by scattered routines, travel, noise, and the false idea that rest means drifting. Christian focus is simpler and stronger than that. It means giving the next faithful task your full attention—listening carefully in conversation, praying without checking messages, finishing work honestly, and returning quickly to Christ when your mind starts to sink.

Prayer of the Day

Lord Jesus, You called Peter onto the water and did not let him go when he began to sink. When my attention scatters and fear grows loud, turn my eyes back to You. Give me focused faith for the next step, the next duty, and the next conversation. Stretch forth Thy hand and keep me near.
