Good morning. Today we sit beside young Samuel in the night, listening as he learns how to answer when God calls his name.
Today's Verse
"Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth."— 1 Samuel 3:9-10
Reflection
Samuel was sleeping near the ark when he heard his name and ran to Eli three times. Only after Eli understood did Samuel return to his place with new words ready: “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.” Obedience began before Samuel knew the whole message. In summer’s slower rhythm, obedience may look like answering a difficult phone call, apologizing promptly, or following through on a responsibility instead of delaying it again.
Obedience starts with a listening heart that is ready to answer before all the details are known.

Obedience in Samuel’s story is not blind hurry; it is attentive readiness. He first responds by getting up and going to Eli, then by returning to lie down where he was told, and finally by speaking the words Eli taught him. His obedience is concrete: he listens, he moves, he answers. That pattern matters. In Scripture, obedience often begins in small actions before larger assignments appear. Abraham went out when called. Mary said yes before she could see the whole road ahead. Jesus teaches, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Samuel shows that obedience is not dramatic performance but a trained willingness to hear and do. In ordinary time, this may mean keeping a promise, telling the truth when it costs you, arriving prepared for work, or making time for prayer before screens and noise take over the day. Obedience is love made visible in action.

Prayer of the Day
Lord, who called Samuel in the night, train my heart to answer, “Speak; for thy servant heareth.” When I am slow, distracted, or resistant, make me willing. Help me obey in the plain duties of this day, with honesty, steadiness, and reverence.
