Nehemiah's dedication to Jerusalem's walls inspires perseverance.

Daily devotional: Nehemiah's Courageous Rebuild

Sunday, July 12, 2026

Dear Friends, today we reflect on Nehemiah's call to rebuild.

Today's Verse

"Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach. Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work."
— Nehemiah 2:17-18

Reflection

Nehemiah faced a daunting task: the walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins, a symbol of vulnerability and despair. Yet, he rallied the people, sharing God's support and the king's endorsement. Today, like Nehemiah, we may encounter projects that feel overwhelming. By leaning on faith and community, we can persevere through challenges, transforming desolation into strength.

Perseverance transforms daunting tasks into achievable goals.

1-Minute Study: Understanding Perseverance

Perseverance is more than persistent effort; it is a commitment to purpose despite obstacles. Nehemiah's story is a testament to this virtue. Faced with opposition, he relied on prayer and planning. In our lives, we can find inspiration in his example, as well as in the Apostle Paul's perseverance through trials (2 Corinthians 11:23-28). Both figures illustrate how holding fast to a vision and faith can lead to extraordinary outcomes, whether rebuilding a city or spreading the Gospel.
