Daily devotional: Recognizing Gratitude: The Story of the Ten Lepers

Thursday, May 21, 2026

Greetings friend, today we reflect on the story of the ten lepers and the one who returned to give thanks.

Today's Verse

"And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."
— Luke 17:12-19

Reflection

In this story, ten lepers called out to Jesus for healing. When healed, only one returned to express gratitude. This Samaritan's thankfulness was significant and transformative. In our busy lives, it’s easy to forget gratitude, yet it holds the power to deepen our relationships and enrich our spiritual journey.

Thankfulness transforms healing into wholeness.

1-Minute Study: Understanding Thankfulness

Thankfulness, as shown by the Samaritan leper, is more than polite gratitude; it is a deep recognition of grace received. In the Bible, thankfulness often accompanies healing and restoration. For instance, in Psalm 100:4, we are invited to 'Enter into his gates with thanksgiving.' The Samaritan's return to Jesus not only acknowledged his healing but also exemplified his faith, highlighting how thankfulness can lead us to a fuller understanding of God’s blessings. Practicing gratitude in everyday moments can open our eyes to the continuous presence and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, especially in this Pentecost season.
