Dear Friend, today we reflect on Joshua's encounter with a divine figure, teaching us about humility.
Today's Verse
"And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so."— Joshua 5:13-15
Reflection
As Joshua approached Jericho, he encountered a mysterious figure with a drawn sword. Recognizing the divine authority before him, Joshua humbly bowed and listened. In our lives, we often face situations where understanding and humility are required. Like Joshua, acknowledging God's presence leads to greater insight and strength.
True humility recognizes and submits to divine authority.
1-Minute Study: Understanding humility
In Joshua 5:13-15, Joshua's initial instinct is to approach the unknown with questions. However, upon realizing he is in the presence of the Lord's commander, he humbly submits, demonstrating the virtue of humility. This humility is not about self-deprecation but about recognizing the rightful place of God in our lives. Biblical humility is echoed in Christ's life, who, though divine, washed his disciples' feet (John 13:14-15). Emulating such humility in our daily interactions fosters relationships marked by respect and love.
