Saint Lucy of Syracuse, Virgin and Martyr (Memorial)

Season: Advent

First Reading

Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11

1And Elias the prophet stood up, as a fire, and his word burnt like a torch.

2He brought a famine upon them, and they that provoked him in their envy, were reduced to a small number, for they could not endure the commandments of the Lord.

3By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and he brought down fire from heaven thrice.

4Thus was Elias magnified in his wondrous works. And who can glory like to thee?

9Who wast taken up in a whirlwind of fire, in a chariot of fiery horses.

10Who art registered in the judgments of times to appease the wrath of the Lord, to reconcile the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.

11Blessed are they that saw thee, and were honoured with thy friendship.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 80:2ac and 3b, 15-16, 18-19

2Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.

3Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

15And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself.

16It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

18So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.

19Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.

Gospel

Matthew 17:9a, 10-13

9And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying,Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

10And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11And Jesus answered and said unto them,Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

12But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.
